Giants keep Manning under contract through 2009

Football Betting Lines

03/20/2007 - East Rutherford, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - According to multiple sources, the New York Giants have exercised a "buy back" of quarterback Eli Manning's deal, a move that will keep him under contract through the 2009 season.

Manning would have otherwise been eligible to become a free agent at the end of the 2007 campaign.

Instead, the Giants opted to make a very costly investment in their signal- caller. A report on Newsday.com says that Manning gets a $5 million buy-back bonus and a $3 million roster bonus to go with a 2007 base salary of $6.45 million. His salary is then scheduled to escalate to $8.45 million in '08 and $8.95 million in '09.

The original deal was for six years, but included an incentive clause related to Manning's performance early on. He reached the agreed-upon marks, thus voiding the last two years on the contract if the buy-back option wasn't invoked.

Manning has racked up 8,049 yards and 54 touchdowns in two-plus seasons as a pro quarterback, and guided the Giants to the postseason in each of the past two seasons.

He has been erratic, however, since being selected No. 1 overall in the 2004 NFL Draft, and currently holds a 54.1 career completion percentage with a 73.2 quarterback rating.
