Bledsoe retires
Football Betting Lines
04/12/2007 - Irving, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Drew Bledsoe, a former No. 1 overall draft selection and one of the most prolific passers in NFL history, retired Wednesday.
The retirement ends a 14-year career in which Bledsoe threw for 44,611 yards and 251 touchdowns for the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys. The 35-year-old, who started for New England when the Patriots lost the Super Bowl to Green Bay in 1996, and who sat on the bench as Tom Brady led the Pats past the Rams in the Super Bowl in 2001, ranks fifth all-time with 3,839 completions, seventh all-time in passing yards, and 13th in touchdown passes.
"I feel so fortunate, so honored, to have played this game that I love for so long, with so many great players, and in front of so many wonderful fans," stated Bledsoe. "I fulfilled a childhood dream the first time I stepped on an NFL field, and the league did not let me down one time. I retire with a smile on my face, in good health, and ready to spend autumns at my kids' games instead of my own. I'm excited to start the next chapter of my life."
Bledsoe helped the Dallas Cowboys to a 9-7 mark in '05 and was 3-3 as a starter -- passing for 1,164 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions -- last season before being benched in favor of Tony Romo.
The Cowboys released the veteran quarterback in March.
The top overall pick in the 1993 draft out of Washington State, Bledsoe made four Pro Bowls in his career. He lost his job to then-backup Tom Brady after being sidelined early in the 2001 season, but returned in the AFC championship game that year when Brady went down, and led the Pats to a victory and a berth in the Super Bowl. Brady went on to win the MVP in the big game, leading the drive that set up Adam Vinatieri's last-second field goal that clinched New England's first championship.
Bledsoe was acquired by Buffalo in 2002, and started for the team through 2004. He requested his release, however, after the team informed him that J.P. Losman would be the starter in 2005.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.
Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.
Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.
A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.
Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.
Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
